Miracle on Ice Part Deux?

Okay...so being the only smart one who writes for this blog, I came up with the topic for what will be our best debate yet. After staring at girls playing with balls and spreading legs over stuff over the past week, I got to thinking about the next Olympics...and then I got to thinking about hockey. I swear it was in that order.

Anyway, the 2010 Olympics could be the last Olympics in which the NHL participates (if Bettman wants to make the biggest mistake in the history of the NHL). With that in mind, I thought we'd open up a debate about who is going to be on the podium at the end of that hockey tournament. Before we do that, I think we should take a look at each of the teams that has a shot at a medal and see what we think their lineup will look like in a year and a half.

I'll give you a topic. Discuss amongst yourselves. Team Canada.

OK, maybe my team was just so definitive that no one can argue with me. The Gagner by the way is Simon, and I think I spelled his name wrong.

Anyway, I will be very surprised if Canada does not win this tournament. This team will have it all. Unbelievable skill, grit, character, intimidation, youth, experience, offensive and defensive defenseman, and home ice advantage. The other teams will all be good, but not this good.

We should try and get tickets to see Canada/Russia. It would be pricey, but worth it.

I posted a comment yesterday but it didn't stick.

Smyth....I hope you are not talking about Ryan? I put St. Louis and Spezza over Smyth.

I also am not sure about Regehr. I guess maybe as the 8th guy. Did you purposely leave off Boyle or was that an ommission? This year will be huge for Redden because right now he is probably not top 8. Shea Weber and Duncan Keith?

Yes, Ryan. I took off St. Louis for him. I could go either way, but Smyth would be a good fit. Spezza is a loser and I'd keep him out if I were in charge.

I purposely left off Boyle because I included Green and Campbell. You don't need all three. I'd take out Campbell before Green. Weber and Keith aren't as good as Regehr and Burns at this point. Maybe after another year. Redden would have to have a monster year to get included. He was barely top 4 on his team last year, much less top 8 for Canada.

Any chance Ribeiro makes it? I guess it will depend on this year, but he was 13th in scoring this past year. Other guys missing: Savard? Briere? Probably off, but worth considering.

On D, I really think Marc Staal will have a shot, but he probably needs another year before he is elite nough to be in their top 8. You will see how good he is this year.

Tomorrow we will talk about the US and Russia.

Staal is very good and probably should warrant consideration. But so will about a dozen other Canadian defenseman who are very good and on the cusp.

The reason I think Staal stays off is because there are other guys who play his style but are better. I'd add Weber and Coburn before Staal. Maybe Mitchell too. This is not a knock on Staal - it's just the Canadians have so many good defenseman. (I think in about 8 years we might be saying the same thing about the US).

I think Bergeron has a good chance of making it depends on how well he comes back this year. But I would think he could content with Ribiero, Savard and Briere.
