So frustrated. Had to write this post three times now because of errors on the site….I better get some comments.
What are people’s thoughts on having NHL tournaments during the season….potentially as the first games of the year? I realize there are some revenue and logistical (# of home games per team, etc) issues but I think those can be worked out. What would be some good tournaments?
Battle for NY/NJ…..Buffalo, NYR, NYI, NJD
Canadian Supremacy…..top 4 Canadian teams based on prior season’s points
Original Six….same concept but with original six teams
Sunshine Bowl……Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Anaheim, San Jose
I think that it would be good for the NHL….just look at what the outdoor games are doing….huge draws. Could generate the buzz the beanpot does in Boston.
Again….look past the logistical issues….what would be some other good tourneys?

Isn't that what regular season series and playoffs are for? Do you really expect that the Devils, Rangers and Islanders will all get together for a weekend tournament at MSG in the middle of the regular season? Like Beanpot format or what? I appreciate your willingness and desire to think outside of the box to improve the NHL, but further to Frosty's earlier point, the likes of the XFL fail for a reason. Gimmicks don't last. The outdoor classic is kinda gimmicky, but it only changes the venue of a single game, not the rules, integrity, or schedule format of the game. Back to the tourney format: Will they get to put their nicknames on their jerseys instead of their last name? Who gets to wear jersey number 69? Do you think they'd be playing floor hockey at the Affinia hotel in between games? Will they exchange team pins afterwards?
I don't understand why that would make it like the XFL. It's not mean to be a gimmick, it would be an annual tradition....just like the beanpot. You are telling me that hockey fans would not be interested if 4 old school NHL teams kicked off the season playing a tournament? Do you consider the outdoor games a gimmick?
So lets take the NY/NJ example. In year 1...Rangers play the Islanders and Devils play Sabres. Winners play each other and losers play each other. Adjust the schedule based on the outcomes. I think it would add intensity to regular season games and generate buzz in that area.
I kind of like the idea, but only in limited circumstances. I don't like the NY battle.
