I just read a retarded post from last month that predicted the Rangers finishing 4th in the East and being better overall this year than last year. How the hell are the Rangers better this year than last year? They lost their captain and best player, a pest who can score, and a bunch of proven veteran secondary scoring (re-signing Shanahan could help that). They didn't address the need that all you Ranger fans were saying was most needed (skating defenseman). They brought in a couple of 4th liners, a lazy Russian who alternates between 25 and 10 goals, a terrible Russian defenseman, a former all-star defenseman who is now an average defenseman (but gets paid like an all-star), and an old wimpy Swede who's career is just about over.
I don't think the Rangers are going to be bad, they might end up being as good as last year's team and they will make the playoffs. But I see no logical reason to say they will be better than last year's team, and the only reason they will make the playoffs is because of Lundqvist.

I can see the Rangers taking 4th in the East based on the East sucking next year. Pitt will be good and after that its a crapshoot. Montreal, NYR, Philly, Ottawa and the Caps can all contend in the East. Wouldn't be surprised if any of those teams ends up second in the East. Of all those teams including Pitt, NYR has the best goalie in Henrik.
Does not seem far fetched to me at all especially since they added the best player in the league that ends in issmiller.
Forgot to comment on Tampa Bay. I think its too early to figure out how good they will be. They will be an offensive force but how good will there D and goaltending be? I think they will be a playoff team but too soon to tell anything else. I don't see Stamkos having the same impact as Toews right away. I think he will be great but he is still only 18.
I think Boston and Buffalo are both going to contend as well.
Everyone knows that Boston plays good defense and has an ugly but above average goaltender. But I think Boston is going to be more dynamic than people think. Ryder got lost in the shuffle last year with Montreal, but he's a proven scorer that has only 6 less goals than Naslund since the lockout and 12 more than Zherdev. He could put up 35 playing with Savard. Kessel seemed to grow up during the playoffs, and was Boston's best player for long stretches. He will score for Boston this year. Lucic is an asskicker that will keep getting better. And getting Bergeron back will be huge.
And although I have to say this, Buffalo will be good. They were I think the second youngest team in the league last year and played without all 3 captains/assistants from the year before. They lost 10 games in a row while Miller was struggling with the death of his cousin and Spacek, Afinogenov, Tallinder, Connolly, and Stafford were all hurt. But they still only missed the playoffs by I think 3 points. All their young forwards are a year older, they traded for a steady 2-way defenseman to play with Spacek, and signed a better backup (because Miller's skinny ass proved this past season that he cannot play 75 games). And they also have 3 selfish forwards in contract years. In 05-06, Connolly, Afinogenov and Kotalik were all pending UFAs. The Sabres were loaded that year, but Afinogenov, Connolly and Kotalik were 1, 3 and 4 in scoring. They are all in contract years this year too.
I agree with you on Boston, they could be decent this year. Savard, Kessell, Lucic, Ryder, Bergeron, Sturm are a good top 6 and Kreijci and Kobesew provide some depth. Chara, Wideman and Ference are not bad and hopefully Fernandez or Thomas step up big. I think a 6th place finish is feasible. By the way, I hate the Zherdev reference, the guy has underachieved his whole career. He is hated on the wiz for his performance last year.
Sabres have a bunch of question marks and are tough to judge. Definitely have talent but can also see them totally falling apart at the seems.
I used Zherdev because he's another scorer that moved to a team we typically discuss. But why do you hate the comparison? And what does it mean when a guy has underachieved his entire career?
I think the Sabres have 1 question mark - leadership. They have a bunch of forwards that can score, good defenseman when healthy, and an all-star goalie. If they fall apart at the seams (which is obviously a possibility) it will be a leadership or injury issue - not ability. Supposedly Rivet is a great character guy and having Numminen will be huge. Hopefully those 2 old timers can help out Buffalo's kids.
